Teater Bangsawan Indie:
Puteri Gunung Ledang
Sakti Siti Djamilah
The production is presented by theatre companies Revolution Stage and Liveinmypoetry, and made possible through Kakiseni’s BOH Cameronian grant for new productions 2022, as well as a financial incentive from the national culture and art department.
Tackling a production about the princess, one of the most popular figures in Malaysian folklore, is no easy feat. The character, after all, has captured the public imagination for decades, with various books, stage shows, and films made of her life.
Our version featured 22 actors and is staged in a style they call “indie bangsawan”, an adaptation of the traditional Malay “bangsawan” – a high-spirited, crowd-pleasing combination of music, dance and drama popular in the Nusantara region from the 19th to mid-20th century.
Synopsis
Tells about the desire of a Sultan of Melaka to marry the Princess of Gunung Ledang, then ordered a courting party for the Princess. Since Puteri Gunung Ledang with her real name, Puteri Siti Djamilah binti Sultan Alam Fattah al-Akbar who is in a hermitage at the top of Mount Ledang is already married to Pati Unus, she already knows that the suitor's party will ask for the help of her spiritual teacher for what way. and how to refuse the suitor, his teacher had given advice on 7 conditions which meant explaining the wisdom for the whole state of Malacca. The teacher attends Tuah who is also in the group, inwardly, reminding Tuah of his earlier regret about Jebat's death because Tuah was too obsessed with being loyal to the king who of course acted cruelly so that the banana would not bear fruit twice. Tuah has left his group after failing to stop the group.
Tun Mamat who succeeded in conveying the Sultan's wishes got a sheet of 7 terms of betrothal and presented it to the Sultan which ended up making the people difficult.
At the end of the tyranny of the Sultan of Melaka when he was about to kill his son, Raja Ahmad, the Princess of Gunung Ledang with her power gave awareness to the attitude of the Sultan of Melaka.
"The Beautiful performance with the heart of Malay culture and interesting story on other views of Puteri Gunung Ledang."
But while bangsawan is known for its lavish sets and extravagant backdrops, this production takes a simple, more stripped-down approach. It is staged at the aptly named Projek Bilik Sempit (Narrow Room Project) at Revolution Stage, which seats about 50. Audience members can watch in the physical space, or catch it online.
We did it in a small space, to give an opportunity to watch bangsawan from a more intimate perspective. All of its other elements, such as the singing, the pantun, the classic language, the style of acting, is retained.”
This is the second instalment of “Theatre Bangsawan Indie” series. Their first, last year’s “Raja Bersiong” (“The Fanged King”), was a big success, picking up accolades at both the Malaysian Theatre Awards and the 18th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.
